WASHINGTON — Conservative commentator Candace Owens' recent appearance at a major economic forum in Russia has reignited a long-running debate within conservative media over foreign influence, ideological consistency and the limits of political dissent.

Owens, who has built a large independent audience since departing The Daily Wire in 2024, traveled to Russia to participate in discussions at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Her appearance drew immediate criticism from some former colleagues and commentators who questioned the decision to participate in an event closely associated with the Russian government.

Candace Owens' visit to Russia has sparked criticism from former Daily Wire executive Jeremy Boreing while reigniting debate over foreign influence, Israel, free speech and ideological divisions within conservative media.

Among those criticizing Owens was former Daily Wire executive Jeremy Boreing, who argued that American commentators should be cautious about appearing at events hosted by governments that are often viewed as geopolitical rivals of the United States. His comments quickly generated a wave of reactions online, with supporters and critics of Owens clashing over the broader implications of her visit.

For Owens' supporters, however, the controversy is about more than a single trip.

Many argue that Boreing's criticism highlights what they see as a double standard within parts of conservative media. They point to Owens' highly publicized split with The Daily Wire following disagreements over Israel, the war in Gaza and foreign-policy issues more broadly.

One commenter responding to Boreing's remarks wrote, "Said the alleged Israeli agent who literally fired Candace for speaking what she believed to be the truth about foreign government influence."

The comment reflects a sentiment frequently expressed by Owens' supporters, who argue that she faced backlash for challenging widely accepted positions on Israel and U.S. foreign policy.

Others strongly disagree.

"We knew Candace was a fraud from the very beginning. We see things very clearly; nobody can mislead us," another commenter wrote, reflecting criticism from those who believe Owens has increasingly aligned herself with controversial narratives and foreign interests.

Neither claim is independently verified, but together they illustrate the deeply polarized reaction surrounding Owens and her growing influence outside traditional conservative media institutions.

At the center of the dispute is a question increasingly debated across the American political spectrum: when does engagement with a foreign country become advocacy for that country's government?

Supporters of Owens argue that attending an event, conducting interviews or speaking with foreign audiences does not necessarily constitute support for a government or its policies. Critics counter that high-profile appearances at state-linked events can provide legitimacy to governments seeking to improve their international image.

The debate has become particularly intense within conservative circles, where disagreements over Israel, Ukraine, Russia and broader questions of American foreign policy have exposed ideological divisions that were far less visible a decade ago.

Owens' departure from The Daily Wire became one of the most prominent examples of those divisions. Since then, she has positioned herself as an independent voice willing to challenge both political parties, mainstream media organizations and former allies.

Whether viewed as a principled dissenter or a controversial provocateur, Owens continues to attract attention far beyond her core audience.

Her Russia visit may ultimately be remembered less for what occurred at the event itself than for the argument it reignited: who gets accused of foreign influence, who makes those accusations and whether the standards applied are consistent across the political landscape.

As those questions continue to divide commentators, politicians and audiences alike, the controversy surrounding Owens shows little sign of fading anytime soon.
