OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norway's royal family is facing one of its most serious health crises in years after Crown Princess Mette-Marit was placed on the national waiting list for a lung transplant as her long-running battle with pulmonary fibrosis worsens.
The Royal House announced that the 52-year-old crown princess had been added to the transplant list following a significant deterioration in her condition. Mette-Marit was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and has periodically reduced public duties while undergoing treatment.
The announcement has prompted an outpouring of support across Norway, where the crown princess remains one of the country's most recognizable public figures. Crown Prince Haakon cut short an official visit to Japan to return home and be with his family as doctors evaluate next steps.
Medical experts note that lung transplants are complex procedures that depend on the availability of a suitable donor. Norwegian health authorities perform only a limited number of lung transplants each year, with strict matching requirements governing the process.

The palace said Mette-Marit will suspend most official engagements while awaiting further medical developments. Officials have indicated that future updates will be limited in order to protect the family's privacy.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and political leaders from across the spectrum expressed support for the crown princess, praising her openness about living with a chronic illness.
The health crisis comes during a challenging period for the royal family, which has also faced a series of public controversies and legal issues involving extended family members.
