MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Rescue and recovery operations continued Tuesday in parts of the Philippines following a powerful earthquake that killed dozens of people, injured hundreds and displaced thousands from their homes.

Emergency crews, military personnel and volunteers have been working around the clock to search damaged buildings, deliver aid and restore essential services in affected communities. Authorities reported widespread structural damage to homes, schools, roads and public facilities across several provinces.

Thousands Displaced as Philippine Authorities Assess Earthquake Damage

Government officials said temporary shelters have been established for residents forced to leave unsafe buildings. Humanitarian organizations are providing food, water, medical assistance and emergency supplies as assessments of the damage continue.

Seismologists recorded multiple aftershocks following the initial earthquake, prompting concerns about additional damage and complicating rescue efforts. Authorities urged residents in heavily affected areas to remain alert and follow safety instructions issued by emergency management agencies.

The Philippines sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic zones, making earthquakes and volcanic activity common across the archipelago. While building standards have improved in recent years, experts note that densely populated areas remain vulnerable to major seismic events.

International aid agencies and neighboring countries have offered assistance, while government officials pledged support for rebuilding efforts expected to continue for months. Economists say the disaster may temporarily affect local economic activity, particularly in areas where transportation and infrastructure suffered significant damage.

As rescue teams continue searching affected areas, officials caution that casualty figures may change as additional information becomes available.

The earthquake has once again highlighted the challenges faced by disaster-prone nations as governments work to strengthen preparedness and improve resilience against future natural hazards.
